STMicroelectronics expand the VIPerPlus family of energy saving off-line high-voltage converters, evaluation board and samples available from Anglia

The VIPER31 series of devices are the latest additions to the VIPerPlus family from STMicroelectronics. These high-voltage converters smartly integrate an 800 V avalanche rugged power MOSFET with PWM current-mode control helping designers to meet the latest energy saving standards whilst simplifying the design and reducing PCB component count.

The 800 V breakdown of the devices allows extended input voltage range to be applied, as well as a reduction in the size of the DRAIN snubber circuit required. The VIPER31 series meets the most stringent energy-saving standards with its very low power consumption and operates in pulse frequency modulation at light load. The devices feature high conversion efficiency performing low power consumption also under no-load condition, below 20mW with a 230V input, and over the wide supply voltage range.

The devices are extremely rugged and feature a range of integrated safety features including overvoltage and undervoltage protections with separate and settable intervention thresholds available at OVP and UVP pins respectively. The UVP can also be used as a disabling input for the entire SMPS, with ultra-low residual input power consumption ensuring compatibility with Standby power regulations. Short-circuit, pulse-skipping and thermal shutdown protection are also integrated into the device.

The VIPER31 series has integrated HV start-up, sense FET, error amplifier and oscillator with frequency jitter PWM controller, this allows designers to create a complete application with a minimum component count. The devices are optimised for the most popular PSU topologies, flyback, buck and buck boost in isolated and non-isolated forms.

The VIPER31 series is suited to power supplies designed for a range of applications including Industrial, Smart Home and Building Automation, Lighting, Utility Metering, Motor Control, Home Appliances, HVAC and Personal Electronics.

Design Support

Three development boards are available for the VIPER31 series allowing designers to evaluate the full features of the devices in a range of general purpose applications.

STEVAL-VP319X1B

Built around the VIPER319X device, the STEVAL-VP319X1B evaluation board implements a 5V/3W Buck converter developed for general purpose applications, operating from a universal input range of 85 to 265VAC as standard. Increasing the size of the input bulk capacitors enables the evaluation board to supply the 3 W in an extended input voltage range of 40 to 265VAC. The main features of the evaluation board are: small size, minimal BOM, high efficiency, low stand-by consumption.

STEVAL-VP318L1F

Designed using the VIPER318L, the STEVAL-VP318L1F evaluation board implements a 15 V - 18 W SSR isolated flyback converter developed for general purpose applications operating from 85 to 265 VAC. The board features a small size, minimal BOM, high efficiency, low stand-by consumption and tight line and load regulation over the entire input and output range. Input overvoltage and undervoltage protections with separate and settable trigger thresholds are available on the respective OVP and UVP pins.

STEVAL-VP318L2F

The STEVAL-VP318L2F reference design is built around the VIPER318LDTR device and implements a 15 V-18 W isolated flyback converter in primary side regulation (PSR) developed for general purpose applications, operating from 90 to 265 VAC.Input overvoltage and undervoltage protections, with separate and settable intervention thresholds, are available at OVP and UVP pins. The evaluation board features small size, minimal BOM, high efficiency and tight line, load regulation over the entire input and output ranges.
