STMicroelectronics Boosts IoT Design Productivity with First Ultra-Compact STM32 Wireless Microcontroller Module, evaluation board available from Anglia

STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics have launched the STM32WB5MMG an ultra-low-power and small form factor certified 2.4GHz wireless module that supports Bluetooth® Low Energy 5.0, Zigbee® 3.0, OpenThread, dynamic and static concurrent modes, and 802.15.4 proprietary protocols. Based on STMicroelectronics STM32WB55VGY wireless microcontroller, the STM32WB5MMG provides best-in-class RF performance thanks to its good receiver sensitivity and a high output power signal.

The STM32WB5MMG modules low-power features enable extended battery life time and can be powered from small coin-cell batteries or using energy harvesting such as solar modules and cells. A real benefit of the STM32WB5MMG module is it requires no RF expertise so can greatly speed-up development time, reduce associated costs and ultimately get your product to market faster.

The novel design and small footprint of the module allows developers to create simplified, low-cost PCBs leveraging the module’s optimized pin-out and can take advantage of existing STM32WB55 MCU firmware libraries, toolchain and ecosystem. In addition, STMicroelectronics has created a dedicated detailed application note as extra guidance for module users.

The STM32WB5MMG module integrates a miniature antenna that has been properly matched to the receiver circuitry, built-in Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) circuitry, and frequency-control components. Furthermore the module includes support for crystal-less USB Full-Speed connectivity allowing users to minimize bill-of-materials costs as well as simplifying the hardware design.

Users are also able to leverage the MCU’s dual-core architecture that separates radio and application-level processing for unimpeded performance, large memories for radio and application code and data storage, and state-of-the-art cybersecurity. To further add convenience, the module is completely protocol stack royalty-free lowering implementation costs and the modules have been certified for a wide geographical area, this means the module can address market opportunities at all levels, including cost-sensitive and highly miniaturized devices.

STMicroelectronics Board

The STM32WB5MMG modules are also included in the STMicroelectronics 10 year longevity commitment program meaning you don’t have to worry about parts going end of life or support being withdrawn with short notice which can happen with similar competitor solutions available in the market that have been designed primarily for fast changing consumer applications.

Cyber protection includes secured software updates including Over-The-Air (OTA) for brand protection and device integrity, customer key storage and Proprietary Code Readout Protection (PCROP) to protect developers’ intellectual property, and Public Key Authentication (PKA) support for cryptographic protection of code and connections.

The combination of high RF performance with low power consumption ensures the module gives reliable connectivity with extended battery life. The modules are suited to a wide range of applications including Lighting and home automation, Wireless audio devices, IoT devices, Wellness, healthcare and personal trackers, Gaming and entertainment devices, Smart locks, Beacons and accessories and Industrial devices for industry 4.0.

The module is housed in a tiny LGA86L package (Land Grid Array) measuring just 7.3mm x 11mm and is specified for operation over the temperature range -40°C to +85°C.

Evaluation Board

STMicroelectronics Board

To support developers STMicroelectronics have also released the STM32WB5MM-DK Discovery kit which is designed as a complete demonstration and development platform for the STM32WB5MMG module based on the Arm® Cortex®-M4 and Arm® Cortex®-M0+ cores.

The hardware features of the Discovery kits are available for users to develop their applications: Audio, USB, user buttons, and Bluetooth® Low Energy. Extension connectors allow easy connection of an ARDUINO® board for a specific application. An ST-LINK/V2-1 is integrated on the board, as an embedded in-circuit debugger and programmer for the STM32 MCU and the USB Virtual COM port bridge.
