STMicroelectronics are powering the next generation of Industry 4.0 applications with a new vibration-sensing solution optimized to enable smart maintenance of factory equipment. The IIS3DWB is a system-in-package MEMS sensor featuring a 3-axis digital vibration sensor with low noise over an ultra-wide and flat frequency range. The wide bandwidth, low noise, very stable and repeatable sensitivity, together with the capability of operating over an extended temperature range (up to +105 °C), make the device particularly suitable for vibration monitoring in industrial applications.
STMicroelectronics state-of-the-art IIS3DWB 3-axis ultra-wide-bandwidth MEMS accelerometer reliably detects vibrations that are prime indicators of a machine’s service requirements. The device, which is covered under STMicroelectronics 10-year availability assurance for industrial products, is optimized for vibration monitoring. The frequency response of the sensor is tailored to be fully flat and with low noise up to 6kHz and then with a sharp cut off and high attenuation to remove frequency-aliasing concerns and to detect machine-related faults with accuracy and consistency. The devices low power consumption helps maximizes the operating lifetime of independently powered sensor nodes.
The IIS3DWB MEMS vibration sensor along with the supporting STEVAL-STWINKT1 multi-sensor evaluation kit can help designers accelerate development of condition-monitoring systems that boost productivity by inferring equipment maintenance needs. By analysing the sensed data from the IIS3DWB vibration sensor either locally or in the cloud allows customers to create strategies that maximize equipment uptime, minimize servicing costs, and avoid emergency repairs. Key features of the IIS3DWB include:
Evaluation Kit
Leveraging STMicroelectronics leading position in MEMS technology, the IIS3DWB MEMS vibration sensor is supported by the STEVAL-STWINKT1 evaluation kit which integrates multiple miniature sensors on-board in addition to the IIS3DWB. There is an onboard Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) radio allowing for connection to an edge device or directly to the Internet along with a serial and USB interface. The evaluation kits many on-board features let solution integrators bypass labour intensive sensor integration to focus on their application and accelerate time to market and offer advanced software features like high-speed data logging for the benefits of new field of exploration like machine learning and AI. The evaluation kit is housed in a plastic enclosure with a rechargeable battery and is ready to begin application development with minimal external equipment presenting designers with a convenient, tried and tested reference design. The comprehensive kit is easy to use and very cost effective eliminating any barriers to Industry 4.0 digital transformation.
