Panasonic have one of the widest ranges of Polymer capacitors available in the industry. Polymer capacitors have excellent frequency characteristics due to their ultra-low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) values; they exhibit low impedance near their resonance point which reduces AC ripple in power circuits. Polymer capacitors are also very stable, showing no capacitance drift over temperature and no DC bias, this stability simplifies the design process as engineers do not need to factor in the capacitance loss due to DC bias which is common with ceramic capacitors. Polymer Capacitors are also very efficient meaning they are available in very small case sizes; this helps to contribute to a compact design with cost and space saving.
Panasonic have four families of Polymer based capacitors; each family has its own unique set of characteristics based on the construction of the capacitor meaning there is a Panasonic Polymer capacitor to suit most application requirements.
Polymer Capacitor family overview by construction
SP-Cap
The SP-Cap family is a rectangular chip-shaped aluminium electrolytic capacitor that uses a polymer as its electrolyte. SP-Cap has several features including low ESR, low ESL, long life span, small size, low profile, and high characteristic stability. Ideal for applications where ripple noise needs to be minimised, they are available in capacitance values from 15uF to 820uF, voltages from 2 to 35VDC with ESR values as low as 3 mΩ. SP-Cap families are available in operating temperature ranges from -55°C to +85/105/125/135°C depending on the series.
Some of the newest additions to the SP-Cap family are the long-life products, JX, KX and TX series, the series have super low ESR down to 3 mΩ, are available in values from 120uF to 470uF, voltages from 2 to 6.3V and can handle ripple currents up to 10.2A. All this performance is housed in a compact surface mount package measuring just 7.3 x 4.3mm with a low-profile height of maximum 1.9mm.
POSCAP
The POSCAP family utilizes sintered tantalum as an anode system and highly conductive polymer created with Panasonic's unique method as a cathode system. This enables POSCAP to be thin and small whilst at the same time having low ESR and superior high frequency characteristics. These features make POSCAP one of the best candidates for digital/high frequency applications. POSCAP also has high reliability and heat resistance. Ideal for applications where size and space saving are important, they are available in capacitances from 10uF to 1500uF, voltages from 2 to 35VDC with ESR values as low as 5 mΩ. POSCAP families are available in operating temperature ranges from -55°C to +105/125°C depending on the series.
A recent addition to the POSCAP family is the TDC series, this series guarantees a lifetime of 1000hrs at 125°C, is available 16V, 20V and 25V with capacitance values from 15uF to 220uF. The TDC series is housed in a compact surface mount package measuring from 3.5 x 2.8mm up to 7.3 x 4.3mm with a low-profile height of just 1.9mm or 2.8mm.
OS-CON
The OS-CON family is an aluminium solid capacitor with highly conductive polymer. OS-CON exhibits low ESR, excellent noise reduction capability and frequency characteristics. In addition, OS-CON has a long-life span and its ESR has minimal change even at low temperatures due to the use of solid electrolyte in its construction. Ideal for applications where high ripple current is required, they are available in capacitances from 3.3uF to 2700uF, voltages from 2 to 100VDC with ESR values as low as 5 mΩ and ripple currents up to 7.5A. OS-CON families are available in operating temperature ranges from -55°C to +105/125°C depending on the series.
One of the key ranges in the OS-CON family is the SVPT series which offers a very high endurance life of 20,000 hrs at 105°C, the SVPT series is available in capacitances from 18uF to 2700uF, voltages from 2.5 to 50VDC with ESR down to 10 mΩ and ripple current capability up to 5.4A depending on the part chosen. The capacitors are housed in a surface mount aluminium can measuring from 6.3 to 10mm diameter with heights from 6.4 to 12.6mm.
Hybrid (Polymer & Electrolyte)
The Hybrid family is constructed using a conductive polymer, aluminium and electrolytic liquid, this allows the capacitor to achieve low ESR, high withstand voltage with high reliability. They are available in surface mount and radial lead packages with capacitances from 10uF to 1000uF, voltages from 25 to 80VDC and ESR values as low as 8 mΩ. The Hybrid family is ideal for applications that require low leakage current and high reliability. Hybrid capacitors can offer vibration-proof variants which can withstand up to 30g vibration making them an excellent choice for harsh environments. Hybrid families are available in operating temperature ranges from -55°C to +105/125/135/145/150°C depending on the series.
The latest addition to the Hybrid family is the ZL series, which achieved the highest capacitance available in the market. ZL series guarantees a lifetime up to 4000hrs at 125°C or 135 °C depending on the case size. The ZL series is available 25 and 35V with capacitance values from 47 to 680uF depending on the part chosen. The ZL series is housed in a compact surface mount package measuring from 5 x 5.8mm 10 x 10.2mm.

Industrial and embedded applications are required to operate under increasingly more stringent conditions, deployed with tighter constraints on space and budgets, and under harsher environments. To meet these demands, Harwin have announced an expansion of the popular Kontrol range of industrial board-to-board interconnects (BBi), by adding single row connectors and cables to the 1.27mm pitch (0.05") connectors. The expansion of the range has been designed to bridge the gap between high-end connectors and established pin header and socket solutions.
