STMicroelectronics have introduced the STM32H7R/S line of MCUs which are based on the high-performance Arm® Cortex®-M7 32-bit RISC core operating at up to 600 MHz, the devices offer applications MPU like performance using a real-time cost effective MCU.
The Cortex -M7 core used in the STM32H7R/S line features a floating-point unit (FPU) which supports Arm double-precision (IEEE 754 compliant) and single-precision data-processing instructions and data types. The Cortex -M7 core includes 32 Kbytes of instruction cache and 32 Kbytes of data cache and the STM32H7R/S devices also support a full set of DSP instructions and a memory protection unit (MPU) to enhance application security.
STM32H7R/S MCUs incorporate high-speed embedded memories, 64 Kbytes of user flash memory and 128 Kbytes of system flash memory, and up to 620 Kbytes of RAM (including 128 Kbytes that can be shared between ITCM and AXI, including 64 Kbytes exclusively ITCM, including 128 Kbyte DTCM, including 64 Kbytes exclusively DTCM, including 32 Kbytes AHB and 4 Kbytes of backup RAM). They also include an extensive range of enhanced I/Os and peripherals connected to APB buses, AHB buses, 2x32-bit multi-AHB bus matrix and a multi-layer AXI interconnect supporting internal and external memory access. To improve application robustness, all memories feature error code correction (one error correction, two error detections).
STM32H7R/S line Block Diagram
The STM32H7R/S lines are available in 4 variants depending on which combination of security and graphics IP are required for the application, STM32H7R3x8 is the entry level model, STM32H7S3x8 adds Root of trust (ST-iROT), Crypto processor (Crypt, PKA, SAES) and On-the-fly encryption/decryption (MCE) security IP, STM32H7R7x8 has Neo-Chrom (GPU2D) graphics IP and STM32H7S7x8 features both the aforementioned security and graphics IP blocks.
The STM32H7R/S lines support high speed external memory interfaces with XiP and come in 10 different packages, ranging from cost-effective 68 pin packages all the way up to 225 pin TFBGA packages, to achieve the optimum performance at the lowest cost. The MCUs all have an operating temperature range of –40 to 85 °C.
The devices embed peripherals allowing mathematical/arithmetic function acceleration (CORDIC coprocessor for trigonometric functions). All the devices offer two ADCs, a low-power RTC, 4 general-purpose 32-bit timers, 7 general-purpose 16-bit timers including one PWM timer for motor control, five low-power timers, a true random number generator (RNG), a HASH processor (HASH), Public key verification acceleration (PKA - ECDSA verification only). The devices support one digital filter for external sigma-delta modulators or digital microphone with voice activity detection. They also feature standard and advanced communication interfaces.
The STM32H7R/S lines are included in STMicroelectronics 10-year Longevity Commitment giving developers reassurance when using the product in new designs.
The STM32H7R/S line of microcontrollers are suitable for a wide range of applications including Motor drive and control, Medical equipment, Industrial, PLC, Inverters, Circuit breakers, Printers and scanners, Security, Video, HVAC, Audio, IoT and Wearable devices.

The STM32H7R/S lines are supported by the NUCLEO-H7S3L8 STM32 Nucleo-144 development board which features the STM32H7S3L8 MCU. The STM32 Nucleo-144 board provides a cost effective and flexible way for users to try out new concepts and build prototypes by choosing from the various combinations of performance and power consumption features, provided by the STM32 microcontroller. For the compatible boards, the internal or external SMPS significantly reduces power consumption in Run mode.
The onboard ST Zio connector, which extends the ARDUINO® Uno V3 connectivity, and the ST morpho headers provide an easy means of expanding the functionality of the Nucleo open development platform with a wide choice of specialized shields. The STM32 Nucleo-144 board does not require any separate probe as it integrates the ST-LINK debugger/programmer.
The NUCLEO-H7S3L8 STM32 Nucleo-144 board comes with the STM32 comprehensive free software libraries and examples available with the STM32Cube MCU Package.
