STMicroelectronics expand the STM32G4 Access Line of ARM microcontrollers with increased memory capacity options, evaluation kit and samples available from Anglia

STMicroelectronics STM32G4

STMicroelectronics has expanded its popular STM32G4 Access Line with the addition of the STM32G491 and STM32G4A1 microcontrollers. These latest members of the STM32G4 Access Line offer increased memory capacity with 112 KB of RAM and up to 512 KB of Flash, compared to the 32 KB of RAM and 128 KB of Flash of the STM32G431. The STM32G4A1 also has a crypto core for applications that require increased security.

The STM32G4 Access Line is a range of mixed-signal microcontrollers with high-resolution timers and a maths accelerator. The high-resolution timer and FMAC (Filter Math ACcelerator) are useful for digital power applications whilst integrated Motor Control timers and CORDIC maths accelerator optimizes motor control systems. The STM32G4 remains a general-purpose MCU in the strict sense of the term, meaning that it will support any embedded system meant to run on a Cortex-M4 and supported by generic STM32 ecosystem. However, it also targets precise applications by providing analog and digital peripherals or features usually absent from similar general-purpose MCUs.

The STM32G4 Access Line provides a cost-effective microcontroller for a wide range of applications including demanding motor control systems but without compromising performances thanks to its Cortex-M4 running at 170 MHz. Developers can now use the STM32G4 in more cost-effective motor control systems, until now, the only solution was to use an STM32G0 with external analog components. The latter is excellent for cost-oriented customers, but there was still a need for more performance and analog integration, the STM32G4 Access Line delivers this. The latest STM32G491/4A1 increased memory additions to the Access Line are pin-to-pin compatible with other STM32G4 models giving developers a fast and simple upgrade path.

The STM32G491 and STM32G4A1 adopt a similar architecture as the other member of the Access Line series. As a result, the microcontrollers do not offer high-resolution timers since engineers only need them for digital power systems. However, they do have the USB-C PD controller, two FDCAN interfaces, and a slew of other communication peripherals. Engineers will also find three fast 12-bit ADCs with gain and offset compensation to offload the CPU. The latest models also include four operational amplifiers, four DAC channels, four ultra-fast comparators, and more.

The STM32G4 Access Line is now offered in 35 models with 2 RAM memory sizes, 32KB and 112KB, and 5 Flash memory sizes, 32KB, 64KB, 128KB, 256KB and 512KB. Offered in pin counts from 32 to 100 pins the Access Line includes 10 models with Crypto AES-256 support.

Long Term support for Industrial applicationsThe STM32G4 Access Line MCU’s are included in STMicroelectronics product longevity program which guarantees the products will remain in mass production for 10 years from the product introduction date. This gives industrial product designers the confidence to integrate them into their applications knowing the parts will not be discontinued in a short space of time.

Development Board

Development Board

The STM32G4x1 access line of microcontrollers are supported by the NUCLEO-G491RE Nucleo-64 development board that gives designers an affordable and flexible way to try out new concepts and build prototypes by choosing from the various combinations of performance and power consumption features, provided by the STM32 microcontroller. For the compatible boards, the external SMPS significantly reduces power consumption in Run mode. The ARDUINO® Uno V3 connectivity support and the STMicroelectronics morpho headers allow the easy expansion of the functionality of the STM32 Nucleo open development platform with a wide choice of specialized shields. The STM32 Nucleo-64 board does not require any separate probe as it integrates the ST-LINK debugger/programmer and comes with the STM32 comprehensive free software libraries and examples available with the STM32Cube MCU Package.
