The STWIN SensorTile wireless industrial node (STEVAL-STWINKT1) from STMicroelectronics is a development kit and reference design that simplifies prototyping and testing of advanced industrial IoT applications such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.
Condition Monitoring
Condition Monitoring (CM) is the monitoring of various parameters such as vibration or temperature to identify potential failures. This method aims at highlighting problems, allowing Preventive Maintenance to be scheduled before any damage occurs. Continuous condition monitoring techniques are normally used on equipment such as compressors, pumps, and motors.
Predictive Maintenance
Predictive Maintenance (PdM) is based on Condition Monitoring, abnormality detection and classification algorithms, and integrates predictive models which can identify the remaining machine runtime left, according to detected abnormalities. This approach uses a wide range of tools, such as statistical analysis and Machine Learning to monitor the state of the equipment.
Both of these techniques rely on accurate and detailed data collection which for Industry 4.0 is now an essential part of the monitoring process and helps ensure factory floor machines run smoothly and efficiently. A typical system will comprise of many combined elements which include sensors, data processing and data analytics.
Typical CM & PdM Block Diagram
STMicroelectronics offers a wide range of products suitable for use in CM or PdM applications such as high-performance, cost-competitive sensors with a 10-year supply guarantee (longevity program), including accelerometers and ultra-sound analog microphones to enable vibration analysis from simple Pass/Fail monitoring to high-accuracy, frequency-based data analysis, as well as a range of environmental sensors for temperature, humidity and pressure sensing. Furthermore STMicroelectronics ultra-low-power STM32 Arm® Cortex® M4 microcontrollers and STM32 Arm® Cortex®-A7® microprocessor series with floating points capabilities can be used to process sensor data at the edge, making them a dedicated toolchain to implement a deep learning approach. STMicroelectronics also provides a range of wired solutions, including IO-Link-compatible devices for industrial wired connectivity, and a portfolio of wireless technologies such as Bluetooth-Low-Energy network processors and transceivers, as well as Sub-1GHz transceivers.

Wireless Development Platform
To assist designers developing CM & PdM applications, STMicroelectronics have introduced the STWIN SensorTile wireless industrial node (STEVAL-STWINKT1) development kit which features a core system board with a range of embedded industrial-grade sensors and an ultra-low-power microcontroller for vibration analysis of 9-DoF motion sensing data across a wide range of vibration frequencies, including very high frequency audio and ultrasound spectra, and high precision local temperature and environmental monitoring. The development kit is complemented with a rich set of software packages and optimized firmware libraries, as well as a cloud dashboard application, all provided to help speed up design cycles for end-to-end solutions.
The kit supports Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless connectivity through an on-board module, Wi-Fi connectivity can also be added through an optional plugin expansion board (STEVAL-STWINWFV1). For applications which require wired connectivity this is also supported via an on-board RS485 transceiver. The core system board also includes an STMod+ connector which allows its capabilities to be further expanded using compatible, low cost, small form factor daughter boards associated with the STM32 family, such as the LTE Cell pack. The kit is provided complete with a 480 mAh Li-Po battery, an STLINK-V3MINI debugger and a plastic enclosure.
