The STM32WBA wireless microcontroller Series from STMicroelectronics brings designers the performance, efficiency, and security required for Bluetooth® Low Energy enabled applications.
The STM32WBA52 multiprotocol wireless and ultralow power device family embeds a powerful and ultralow power radio compliant with the Bluetooth® SIG Low Energy specification 5.4 alongside a high-performance Arm Cortex-M33 32-bit RISC core which operates at a frequency of up to 100 MHz.. The devices integrate a 2.4 GHz RADIO supporting the Bluetooth Low Energy standard and other proprietary protocols if required, extended far end communications range is also possible thanks to +10 dBm output power. The Cortex-M33 core features a single-precision floating-point unit (FPU), supporting all the Arm single-precision data-processing instructions and all the data types. The core also implements a full set of DSP (digital signal processing) instructions and a memory protection unit (MPU) that enhances the application security.
Focusing on the Bluetooth® Low Energy 5.4 protocol, the STM32WBA series allows non-expert developers to easily add wireless communication to their device at an affordable cost. Leveraging the STM32U5 architecture, the STM32WBA series is an ultra-low power platform and offers inherited digital and analog peripherals, suitable for many applications, from industrial, to smart home and consumer markets. The ultra-low power performance of these microcontrollers allows increased battery life especially when using the advertising extension for device communication feature. The realisation of low-power end product designs is further enabled by a comprehensive set of power-saving modes.
The STM32WBA wireless MCU Series embeds large memory to sustain both applications and connectivity activities, coming with up to 1 Mbytes of flash memory and 128 Kbytes of RAM. A smart set of peripherals like ADC, touch sensing, times, make this product a self-sufficient application wireless MCU.
STM32WBA series overview
For IoT devices STMicroelectronics recognise that security is paramount, the STM32WBA Series offer security foundation compliant with the TBSA (trusted-based security architecture) requirements from Arm. They embed the necessary security features to implement a secure boot, secure data storage, and secure firmware update. Besides these capabilities, the devices incorporate a secure firmware installation feature that allows the customer to secure the provisioning of the code during its production. A flexible life cycle is managed thanks to multiple levels readout protection and debug unlock with password.

Firmware hardware isolation is supported thanks to securable peripherals, memories and I/Os, and privilege configuration of peripherals and memories. The devices also feature several protection mechanisms for embedded flash memory and SRAM: readout protection, write protection, secure, and hide protection areas. The devices embed several peripherals reinforcing security: a fast AES coprocessor, a secure AES coprocessor with DPA resistance and hardware unique key that can be shared by hardware with fast AES, a PKA (public key accelerator) with DPA resistance, a HASH hardware accelerator, and a true random number generator. The devices offer active tamper detection and protection against transient perturbation attacks, thanks to several internal monitoring generating secret data erase in case of attack. This helps to fit the PCI requirements for point of sales applications.
Block Diagram overview
The devices offer a whole host of onboard peripherals including a 12-bit ADC (2.5 msps), two comparators, a low-power RTC, one 32-bit general-purpose timer, one 16-bit PWM timer for motor control, three 16-bit general-purpose timers, and two 16-bit low-power timers. They also feature standard and advanced communication interfaces, namely two I2Cs, two SPIs, one SAI, two USARTs, and one low-power UART. Many peripherals (including radio, communication, analog, and timer peripherals) can be functional and autonomous in Stop mode with direct memory access thanks to BAM (background autonomous mode) support. Some independent power supplies are also supported, like an analog independent supply input for ADC, and radio dedicated supply inputs for the 2.4 GHz RADIO.
The STM32WBA MCU is offered in two packages: UFQFPN in 32 pin 5 x 5 mm and 48 pin 7 x 7 mm, or UFBGA in 59 pin 5 x 5 mm. Devices have an operating temperature range of -40 °C to 85 °C (105 °C junction) and operate from a 1.71 to 3.6 V power supply.
Product Longevity
The STM32WBA MCU series is also included in STMicroelectronics 10-year Longevity Program giving developers the reassurance to use the product in new designs.
