The VL6180X sensing module is the latest product based on ST’s patented FlightSenseTM technology. This ground-breaking technology allows absolute distance to be measured independent of target reflectance. Instead of estimating the distance by measuring the amount of light reflected back from the object which is significantly influenced by the target colour and surface finish, the VL6180X precisely measures the time the light takes to travel to the nearest object and reflect back to the sensor (Time-of-Flight).
The VL6180X sensing module combines an IR emitter, a range sensor and an ambient light sensor in a three-in-one ready-to-use surface mount 8 pin QFN package measuring just 4.8 x 2.8 x 1mm. The package is compatible with reflow solder processes making the VL6180X very easy to integrate into a design and saves the product designer long and costly optical and mechanical design optimizations.
The VL6180X sensing module can automatically perform ranging and ambient light sensing (ALS) measurements at user defined intervals, multiple threshold and interrupt schemes are also supported to minimize host operations. Host control and result reading is performed using a simple I²C interface and optional additional functions, such as measurement ready and threshold interrupts, are provided by two programmable GPIO pins. The module has an operating voltage of 2.5V to 3.0V and is designed to operate over -20°C to 70°C temperature range.
The VL6180X sensing module is designed for ultra-low power operation with standby mode consuming <1uA, making the module suitable for use in battery powered applications such as remote sensing.
Typical applications for the VL6180X sensing module include Industrial control, Gesture recognition, Home Appliance, Lighting Control, Access Control, Robotics, Medical, Security and Home Automation.

The VL6180X sensing module is supported by the STMicroelectronics P-NUCLEO-6180X1 (STM32F401RE MCU, full featured) and P-NUCLEO-6180X2 (STM32L053R8 MCU, low power) development boards which allow the designer to evaluate all the features of the sensing module. The development boards are fitted with a VL6180X sensing module and a 4 digit display which can display distance, ambient light level and gesture sensing. The board can be used in 2 modes, ranging and ambient light mode, additional sensors can also be added. The development boards can be used standalone or interfaced to a PC USB port using the downloadable graphical user interface allowing extended functionality.

In the world of connected devices, one truth stands firm: even the smartest technology fails if it can’t survive the environment it’s built for. Rain, dust, vibration, UV—these forces don’t care how elegant your circuitry is. They’re relentless. That’s why CamdenBoss created Node & Hub: a new family of enclosures engineered not just to protect electronics, but to make every installation faster, cleaner, and smarter.
