Introducing the Grid-EYE High Precision Infrared Array Sensor from Panasonic

ADV title

The AMG88xx series of Grid-EYE sensors from Panasonic feature 64 thermopile elements in an 8x8 grid array that can detect absolute temperatures by infrared radiation. Grid-EYE is able to measure actual temperature and temperature gradients effectively providing a thermal image of the area being monitored. This allows the sensor to easily detect multiple persons and identify their positions and direction of movement, this can be done almost independent of ambient lighting conditions and without disturbing privacy as with conventional cameras.

The cost-effective Grid-EYE High Precision Infrared Array Sensors are based on advanced MEMS technology and offer a robust and compact solution for contactless temperature measurement across the entire specified area with very accurate results. The built-in silicon lens provides a viewing angle of 60°.

Key Features
  • Based on advanced MEMS technology
  • Temperature detection of two-dimensional area: 8 × 8 array (64 pixels)
  • Choice of operating voltages: 3.3 VDC or 5.0 VDC
  • Available in Low Gain or High Gain versions
  • Digital I2C output
  • Capability for contactless temperature measurement with ±2.5°C accuracy
  • Compact SMD package compatible with reflow solder process
  • Operating temperature range 0°C to +80°C (High Gain) and -20°C to +80°C (Low Gain)
  • RoHS compliant
Data

The temperature measurement values can be read out via I²C interface at 1 or 10 frames per second. The interrupt signal output delivers a quick response to time-critical events, offering a high degree of flexibility. The high gain sensors have a typical temperature accuracy of ±2.5°C whereas the low gain sensors have an accuracy of ±3.0°C.

Functional Block diagram

Compared to single element thermopile sensors and pyro-electric detectors, Grid-EYE sensors offer designers extended possibilities for detecting persons and objects, enabling advanced applications. Typical applications include Professional and Consumer kitchen appliances, HVAC systems, Building controls, Energy management, Digital signage, Security systems, Patient position detection, Thermal imaging, Industrial process control, Contact-less temperature measurement and Automatic door and occupancy controls.
