HARTING have introduced the ix Industrial® Ethernet connector system, designed to the IEC 61076-3-124 standard these connectors meet the requirement for high speed data transmission, excellent EMI immunity and robust construction required by the Industry 4.0 revolution.
Until now Ethernet interfaces specified for use in IP20 environments have been served by the traditional RJ45 connector. This connector, which is the most widely used in the world, is omnipresent and therefore loved by users. However the traditional RJ45 connector lacks the robustness required for use in industrial or other harsh environments, typical issues include broken locking tabs compromising cable retention and occasional contact problems, many users will have experienced these and other issues with the traditional RJ45 connector system. With increasing miniaturisation, such as flat mobile devices, displays, smaller automation devices, cameras and sensors, the size of the RJ45 also limits the miniaturisation possible. Thus, a smaller and more robust plug-in connection system is on the wish list of many users and developers, though one which can still produce Cat. 6A performance for 1/10Gbit/s Ethernet at a control level. The HARTING ix Industrial® connector system meets this brief and offers a miniaturised alternative to the RJ45. However it’s not just another connector system, it has been recognised as an industry standard according to IEC 61076-3-124 and a reliable interface for device manufacturers.
70% less board space than traditional Ethernet connectors
The ix Industrial® interface requires 70 % less installation space compared to typical RJ45 sockets, this makes it possible to significantly reduce the size of the full spectrum of device types, it also allows designers to increase the density of data connections on the devices if required.
The connectors meet Cat. 6A performance meaning the ix Industrial® mating face is engineered future-proof for 1/10 Gbit/s Ethernet, while its high current-carrying capacity enables current and future PoE applications. This interface consequently combines data transmission and power supply in a single interface, thereby additionally reducing the installation space required for termination technology in customers applications.
HARTING's ix Industrial® connectors guarantee that your devices will function reliably and flawlessly. This is ensured by five robust THR shield contacts which permanently and securely affix the socket to the printed circuit board, thereby preventing damage to the conductor tracks caused by the exertion of high forces on the sockets.
High EMC immunity
The HARTING ix Industrial® connector provides safe data transmission, even in EMC-critical applications. This is ensured by the continuous 360° shield design of the connector and guarantees high EMC immunity to interference.
The ix Industrial® connectors feature an active locking of the socket, this is achieved using two stable snap-in hooks made of metal, providing clear haptic feedback which confirms a secure connection. The connection between cable sheath and plug connection is engineered in the form of a robust crimp connection. This ensures a perfect and robust interface that even meets the high shock and vibration resistance established in EN 50155 railway specifications, guaranteeing a long service life that boasts 5,000 mating cycles.
