Bourns has a comprehensive range of products offering surge protection against Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) events. Surge protection is extremely important in modern electronic systems particularly those with I/O data ports which are susceptible to user errors such as incorrect cables being plugged in or external ESD/EFT events which can cause complete system failure unless adequate protection is built in to these I/O ports.
Bourns has produced a PortNote® Solution flyer which addresses protection against ESD, EFT, power and surge faults on RS-485 serial ports which are commonly used in industrial electronic systems. The solution uses 2 x TBU® High-Speed Protectors, 2 x Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) and 1 x TVS Diode Array and allows compliance with IEC 61000-4-2 ESD Level 4 (8 kV / 15 kV), IEC 61000-4-4 EFT and IEC 61000-4-5 Surge / Lightning.

This circuit solution provides excellent protection for both indoor and outdoor applications, it also protects against 28 VRMS and 120 VRMS power cross condition.
Key Features
The Bourns TBU® devices are low capacitance single bidirectional high-speed protection components, constructed using MOSFET semiconductor technology, and designed to protect against faults caused by short circuits, AC power cross, induction and lightning surges. The TBU® high-speed protector can be placed in the system circuit and will monitor the current with the MOSFET detection circuit triggering to provide an effective barrier behind which sensitive electronics will not be exposed to large voltages or currents during surge events.

The Bourns MOV-10DxxxK Series of 10 mm radial leaded varistor devices protects against overvoltage transients such as lightning, power contact and power induction. The metal oxide varistors (MOV) offer a choice of varistor voltages and a high current handling, high energy absorption capability and fast response times to protect against transient faults up to rated limits.

The Bourns CDSOT23-SM712 device provides ESD, EFT and Surge protection for data ports meeting IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD), IEC 61000-4-4 (EFT) and IEC 61000-4-5 (Surge) requirements. The Transient Voltage Suppressor array features 2 TVS diodes with Working Peak Reverse Voltage of 7 V or 12 V with Minimum Breakdown Voltage of 7.5 V or 13.3 V respectively. The device is offered in the industry standard compact SOT23 package.
