Introducing the ISL8541x series of Synchronous Buck Regulators with Integrated FETs from Intersil

The ISL85410/ 18/ 15/ 13/ 12 switching regulators from Intersil are designed to support a wide range of input and output voltages and address multiple voltage rail requirements within complex systems. The pin-compatible devices integrate both high-side and low-side FETs thus eliminating the need for an inefficient low-side diode. This results in reduced board space and BOM cost as well as improved efficiency in a variety of industrial and medical applications.

The output current options of the sync buck regulator family include ISL85410 (1A), ISL85418 (800mA) ISL85415 (500 mA), ISL85413 (300 mA) and ISL85412 (150 mA). The ISL85410/8/5 are pin-to-pin compatible with each other, while the ISL85412/3 are pin-compatible with each other.

All products support a wide input voltage range from 3V to 40V (except the ISL85415, VIN is 3V to 36V). Designers can easily reuse a single, reliable layout for different power levels allowing for enhanced flexibility, reduced design time and decreased time to market.

The ISL8541x series integrates both high-side and low-side NMOS FETs and features a PFM mode for improved efficiency at light loads, this feature can be disabled if a forced PWM mode is desired. The parts switch at a default frequency of 500kHz but may also be programmed using an external resistor from 300kHz to 2MHz. The ISL8541x series has the ability to utilize internal or external compensation.

By integrating both NMOS devices and providing internal configuration options, minimal external components are required, reducing BOM count and complexity of design.

With the wide VIN range and reduced BOM, the parts provide an easy to implement design solution for a variety of applications while giving superior performance. They provide a very robust design for high voltage industrial applications as well as an efficient solution for battery powered applications. Typical applications include Industrial control, Medical devices, Portable instrumentation, Distributed Power supplies and Cloud Infrastructure.

The ISL8541x series is available in a small Pb-free 4mmx3mm DFN12 or 3mmx3mm TDFN (ISL85412/3) plastic package with a full-range industrial temperature of -40°C to +125°C

The ISL8541x series is supported by a range of demonstration boards, ISL85410DEMO1Z, ISL85418DEMO1Z, ISL85415DEMO1Z, ISL85413DEMO1Z and ISL85412DEMO1Z, these boards are intended for use for Point-of-Load applications sourcing from 3V to 40V (depending on the model). The boards are used to demonstrate the performance of the ISL85410, ISL85418, ISL85415, ISL85413 and ISL85412 Wide VIN Low Quiescent Current High Efficiency Sync Buck Regulators with 1A (ISL85410), 800mA (ISL85418), 500mA (ISL85415), 300mA (ISL85413) and 150mA (ISL85412) output current.
