Introducing the SP1ML SUB GHz RF module based on the low power SPIRIT1 transceiver from STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics have introduced the SP1ML-868 and SP1ML-915 low power RF modules based around their popular SPIRIT1 transceiver IC, the modules feature integrated voltage regulation, antenna, crystal and microcontroller and are housed in a compact surface mount module form-factor. The modules allow OEMs to easily add wireless capability to any electronic device without requiring in-depth RF experience. The modules also carry the necessary FCC modular approvals and CE compliance to reduce time to market.

The SP1ML-868 modules operate in the 868MHz ISM frequency band and the SP1ML-915 operates in the 915MHz ISM frequency band, based on the SPIRIT1 transceiver IC from STMicroelectronics the modules feature very low power consumption using up to 20mA current in operating mode and just 1.4uA when in standby mode.

Data

The SP1ML modules feature a UART host interface which allows simple connection to an external microcontroller, access to module features is provided through an extended AT command set. A simple cable replacement model allows the module to be used similarly to a standard serial interface.

The on-board microcontroller serial wire debug signals are available and allow the standard firmware to be replaced by a user application if required, this enables the modules to be used as a wireless application module where no external microprocessor system is required reducing cost and component count in the end application. Selected GPIO and peripherals are available on the on-board STM32L microcontroller for interfacing to external devices in the user application, and advanced features of the SPIRIT1 radio are also accessible.

The SP1ML SUB GHz modules can be used in a wide range of applications including serial cable replacement, building automation, security, M2M industrial control, service diagnostics and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The SP1ML modules are supported by the STEVAL-SP1ML868 and STEVAL-SP1ML915 evaluation boards, these design tools allow evaluation of STMicroelectronics SP1ML-868 and SP1ML-915 low power RF modules in a quick and simple way. The evaluation boards comprise of a USB dongle with on-board module, RF antenna and a USB connector. The USB connector is used to connect the dongle to a PC, to access the sub GHz RF module and to supply power to the dongle.
