The devices have a 2-bit quadrature output and can be specified in 12, 18 or 24 pulses per 360° rotation (PPR) for PEC11R series and 15 PPR for the PEC11S series. Both series feature long rotational life with up to 30K minimum cycles on the PEC11R and 15K minimum cycles on the PEC11S.

The PEC11 encoders can be specified with detents to aid precise selection and a push momentary action SPST switch, the switch option is useful in applications where users rotate the encoder to highlight an option and then push to select it. The encoders have a metal shaft with options including Flatted or Knurled style in lengths of 9.5 mm, 13.5 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm and 30 mm depending on the model chosen.

The PEC11 series can be used in applications including audio-visual equipment, consumer electronic appliances, portable electronics, and communication equipment. Other applications include professional audio equipment such as keyboards, electronic drum programmers, and portable audio mixers and recording devices.

Optical Encoders

For applications requiring extended rotational life, Bourns has the popular EM14 and EN series of Rotary Optical Encoders. Typical applications include temperature control, speed control, position sensing, menu selection and volume control.

The EM14 series from Bourns is a 14 mm rotary optical encoder producing a 2-bit quadrature output signal with optional resolutions of 8, 16, 32 or 64 PPR. The output of the encoder is HCMOS, CMOS and TTL compatible.

Bourn Switch 3

The EM14 features long rotational life, from 200K to 2 million revolutions, and offers the option of detents for applications where tactile user feedback is required to aid precise menu selection. The EM14 can also be configured with a push switch in standard or high operating force depending on the application requirement.

The EM14 Optical Encoders can be specified in a wide range of shaft style and length options, terminations are PCB pins for vertical or horizontal mounting or a cable/connector option where the encoder is to be mounted onto a panel.

The Bourns® Model EN series is a self-contained rotary optical encoder, it produces a 2-bit quadrature signal which is suitable for digital systems where both magnitude and direction of adjustment must be provided.

Bourn Switch 4

The EN encoder is ideal for use as a digital panel control or as a position sensing device in applications where long life, reliability, high resolution and precise linearity are critical. The EN series encoder converts rotary input into electrical signals which can be used by microprocessors without A/D conversion, the outputs are CMOS and TTL compatible. Bourns® encoder output signals are square wave digital pulses which do not require debounce circuitry. Both features make it possible to significantly reduce the memory overhead, wiring and wiring interconnects required by other types of control devices. The EN series is available in resolutions from 25 to 256 PPR. The EN series can be specified with different shaft styles and lengths to suit most applications, furthermore there is a choice of termination style in PCB or wire leads allowing a wide range of convenient mounting options to be realised.

EN optical encoders offer a useful rotational life of from 10 million to 200 million shaft revolutions, making them ideal for extended service applications. The Bourns® Model EN series encoder is also compact, measuring just 21 mm x 16 mm it is very well suited for situations where the available space is limited.
