STMicroelectronics have introduced the LED1202 a 12-channel low quiescent current LED driver, the device guarantees 5V output driving capability with each channel able to provide up to 20mA with a headroom voltage of 350 mV (typ.) only. The output current can be adjusted separately for each channel by 8-bit analog and 12-bit digital dimming control.
Designed for LEDs based enhanced lighting effects for application working with low Vin voltage (battery powered), the LED1202 can drive up 12 LEDs (or 4 LEDs in RGB mode configuration). The device can store up to eight patterns in the internal registers for automatic sequencing without the need for intervention from the host Microcontroller, the pattern sequences can be also configured for duration time and number of repetition. This sequence feature enables the host system to save overhead resources and power whilst the predetermined light pattern is being run directly from the LED1202. The on-board 12-bit digital and 8-bit analog controllers allow precise LEDs Brightness control.
The LED1202 device has two methods for dimming LED light: changing the output DC current value (analog dimming) or modifying the output current duty-cycle (digital dimming). The two methods are not mutually exclusive and can be used at the same time to generate a specific channel by channel 20 bit depth dimming.

A slow turn-on and turn-off time improves the system low noise generation performance thus reducing EMI; moreover, the phase shifting function helps to reduce the inrush current.
The LED1202 allows up to 8 different I2C addresses in order to control larger arrays of LEDs (up to 96 LEDs), for multi-device applications on a single bus. On top of the specific I2C address, LED1202 always responds to a “global address” which is useful for sending a command to all devices on the same bus at the same time. Moreover, it is also possible to connect all the devices in a common clock domain configuration for timing synchronization of all the devices.
The LED1202 device includes a number of built in safety features which include Over-temperature, Open Led, Pattern End, Start Of Frame and a dedicated IRQ pin where these features conditions are flagged. The device is available in two compact package styles, WLCSP20 package 1.71 x 2.16 x 0.5 mm with 0.4 mm pitch and QFN20 3x3 package 3 x 3 x 0.6 mm with 0.5 mm pitch.
To help designers evaluate all the features of the LED1202 driver, STMicroelectronics have made the STEVAL-LLL007V1 evaluation kit available which consists of a main board which can be connected to the NUCLEO-L073RZ development platform running the STSW-LLL007FW firmware, and 2 LED panel boards to run demonstrations on. The STSW-LLL007FW firmware comes with pre-configured random and wave patterns for use in standalone mode allowing users to quickly get up and running. The kit also allows designers to develop their own pattern sequences by connecting the Nucleo platform to a PC running a dedicated GUI program, which also gives you access to all the LED driver settings.
The LED1202 LED driver is suitable for a wide range of applications where LED colour changing and dimming effects are required such as wearable devices, signage and appliances.
