Renesas introduce the IDT® ZMOD4410 Indoor Air Quality Platform Gas Sensor Platform

IDT ZMOD

The IDT® ZMOD4410 Gas Sensor Module from Renesas is designed for detecting total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) and monitoring indoor air quality (IAQ). It is a 12-pin LGA assembly (3.0 x 3.0 x 0.7 mm) that consists of a gas sense element and a CMOS signal conditioning IC. The module’s sense element consists of a heater element on a Si-based MEMS structure and a metal oxide (MOx) chemiresistor. The signal conditioner controls the sensor temperature and measures the MOx conductivity, which is a function of the gas concentration.

White Paper Data

The measurement results can be read via an I²C interface with the user’s microprocessor, which processes the data to determine the TVOC concentration, IAQ rating and estimated carbon dioxide (eCO2) level. This flexibility makes the sensors in the ZMOD4410 platform capable of providing a variety of measurement options by varying the method of operation or changing the firmware used to interpret the resistance measurements.

The ZMOD4410 sensors are also electrically and chemically tested to ensure consistency from lot to lot, an important advantage for manufacturers with long production runs. The ZMOD4410 devices offer best-in-class reliability as a result of receiving complete qualification for harsh use cases – such as siloxanes – and from an unprecedented life characterization.

ZMOD4410 TVOC and Indoor Air Quality Sensor Platform Overview

Downloadable firmware libraries and source code enables detection of TVOC and odours and supports smart devices measuring IAQ that require low-power operation. One such upgrade to the Firmware added low power capability to the ZMOD4410 sensors – approximately 1mW – helping to maximize battery life in smart devices, dramatically reducing how often batteries have to be replaced and improving the user experience.

Evaluation Kit

The ZMOD4410 TVOC Sensor is supported by the ZMOD4410-EVK evaluation kit giving designers and engineers an easy way to evaluate the Indoor Air Quality sensor. While the ASIC inside the sensor module controls the actual MOx and MEMS sensing element, the MCU-based electronic module controls the I²C to USB communication interface. The system may be connected to a Windows PC via a bi-directional USB connection and the sensor may be started by using the provided evaluation software. In the Standard Operation method, the output is shown as a raw signal (resistance), a standardized indoor air quality (IAQ) rating and an estimated CO2 (eCO2). Sensor operating parameters such as sample time are customizable to allow flexibility.
