Introducing the LED5000 monolithic step-down 3A DC-DC converter with dimming capability from STMicroelectronics

The LED5000 device from STMicroelectronics is an 850 kHz fixed switching frequency monolithic step-down DC-DC converter which has been designed to operate as a precise constant current source and features an adjustable current capability up to 3 A DC.

The LED5000 DC-DC converter features an embedded PWM dimming circuit which allows control and adjustment of the LED brightness. The regulated output current level of the LED5000 can be simply set by connecting a sensing resistor to the feedback pin of the device. With just 200 mV typical RSENSE voltage drop, the LED5000 has enhanced performance in terms of efficiency, a key requirement for LED lighting designs. The device also has integrated protection against overheating, overcurrent and output short-circuit.

Furthermore the high switching frequency of the device and compatibility with standard ceramic output capacitors allows the overall PCB space required to be greatly reduced.

Due to the high levels of integration in the LED5000 device the typical circuit design is simplified requiring only a minimal amount of external components.

The device is available in the compact HSOP8 package which measures just 5.0mm x 6.2mm.

The LED5000 is suitable for use in high brightness LED driving, street lighting, signage, halogen bulb replacement and general consumer, retail and industrial lighting applications.

The LED5000 DC-DC converter is supported by the STEVAL-ILL056V1 product evaluation board, the board has been designed to allow engineers to quickly evaluate the performance and features of the device.
