STMicroelectronics STEVAL-WESU1 reference unit helps designers implement the latest technologies in wearable and portable applications.

ST Title Image

The STEVAL-WESU1 evaluation kit from STMicroelectronics is a reference design developed and optimized to help designers implement the latest technologies in wearable and portable applications. The evaluation kit provides a highly efficient and effective solution for precise motion sensing in wearable applications.

The small form factor of the hardware allows it to be enclosed in a watch strap, so the user can experience a real activity monitoring system and immediately begin appreciating the sensor data acquisition. The design allows users to explore all of the embedded hardware and firmware features thanks to the ST WeSU app available free of charge from Apple Store™ and Google Play™ stores. The Apps are based on BlueST SDK, available on GitHub.

Advanced users can also further reduce the hardware form factor, refer to STEVAL-WESU1 user manual for more details.

The STEVAL-WESU1 evaluation kit embeds a low power ARM Cortex-M3 microcontroller unit (STM32L151VE), an iNEMO inertial module (LSM6DS3), a high performance magnetometer (LIS3MDL), a barometric pressure sensor (LPS25HB), a Bluetooth® low energy wireless network processor (BLUENRG-MS) and power management circuitry that allows fast charging and precise energy estimation (STNS01 and STC3115).

The STEVAL-WESU1 firmware package is built on the STM32Cube software technology so it can easily be augmented with further algorithms. The BlueST protocol provides structured services and characteristics to expose the board functionalities and communicate with an Android or iOS smartphone via Bluetooth low energy wireless communication. Moreover, the ST WeSUApp provides specific demos for algorithms like AHRS, pedometer, free fall detection, as well as battery information and RF signal strength (RSSI). The App also includes command line interface functionality via a debug console for smart device control by managing permanent and session settings registers of the STEVAL-WESU1

The firmware for the reference kit is freely available from STMicroelectronics, click here to download.
