BlueNRG-1 is STMicroelectronics first Bluetooth® Low Energy Application Processor optimized to satisfy the fast-growing Internet Of Things market, combining superior energy efficiency and strong radio performance.
Bluetooth® Low Energy devices must ensure energy-efficient operation, including extremely low power consumption in sleep and standby modes that are used frequently to maximize battery life. Strong radio performance is also needed to advertise availability and connect reliably. ST has designed its new BlueNRG-1 programmable SoC with performance and power to satisfy these requirements. The BlueNRG-1 exhibits unmatchable energy efficiency due to its ultra-low power consumption as well as its incredible state transition speed between low-power and active states, greatly extending battery life from months to years. RF-output power is also boosted to +8 dBm to ensure clear and reliable communication even in noisy environments.
The ultra-low-power of the BlueNRG-1 makes it ideal for energy-constrained smart sensors and connected devices like wearables, retail beacons, keyless entry systems, smart remote controllers, asset trackers, industrial and medical monitors being a perfect enabler of the Internet Of Things (IoT) applications.
In addition to efficient performance and low power consumption, BlueNRG-1 also offers value-added features that make device designers’ lives easier. These include a dedicated digital-microphone input that simplifies voice-enabled applications and 105°C maximum operating temperature suitable for smart-lighting and automotive applications (such as passive-entry-passive-start or on-board-diagnostic devices). Support for the latest Bluetooth® Low Energy version 4.2 specification ensures advanced privacy and security.
The device extends the features of the award-winning BlueNRG network processor, enabling the usage of the embedded Cortex M0 for running the user application code. It includes 160 KB of programming Flash memory, 24 KB of static RAM memory with retention (two 12 KB banks) and SPI, UART, I2C standard communication interface peripherals. It also features multifunction timers, watchdog, RTC and a DMA controller. An ADC is available for interfacing with analog sensors and for reading the measurement of the integrated battery monitor. A digital filter is also provided for processing a PDM stream.
The BlueNRG-1 offers the same excellent RF performance of the BlueNRG radio and the integrated high efficiency DC/DC converter keeps the same ultra-low power characteristics, but the BlueNRG-1 improves the BlueNRG sleep mode current consumption allowing a further increase in the battery lifetime.
BlueNRG-1 comes with ST’s market-proven Bluetooth® Low Energy stack in the form of a ready-to-use linkable library. Library linking at build-time removes unused parts of the stack so as to ensure efficient memory utilization. Pre-certified profiles for medical devices, proximity monitor and other devices are provided, as well as tools and collaterals that support app development for iOS® or Android™ devices.
The BlueNRG-1 device is supported by the STEVAL-IDB007V1 development tool. The development tool is fitted with a BlueNRG-1, low power Bluetooth® smart system on chip, compliant with the Bluetooth® v4.1 specification and supporting master, slave and simultaneous master-and-slave roles.
The STEVAL-IDB007V1 development tool provides a set of hardware resources for implementing a wide range of application scenarios: sensor data (accelerometer, pressure and temperature sensor), remote control (buttons and LEDs) and manages debug messages though USB virtual COM. The board has three power options available (USB only, battery only, external power supply + USB) allowing for high level of application development and testing flexibility.
Designers using BlueNRG-1 also have access to a comprehensive development ecosystem, including a software development kit (SDK) with APIs, sensor drivers, sample applications and more. Recognizing the importance of power consumption in Bluetooth® Low Energy applications, there is also a current-estimation tool that helps assess the effects of changing factors such as transmit output power, master/slave sleep clock accuracy, RAM retention, connection advertising or scanning interval, data length, and DC-DC converter activation.
