Introducing the STM32L4 series of Ultra-Low Power ARM MCUs from STMicroelectronics

STMicroelectronics has developed a new highly flexible architecture to help it reach best-in-class ultra-low-power figures. The STM32L4 series of MCUs have scored 153 in the standardized EEMBC™ ULPBench® tests that compare the efficiency of ultra-low-power microcontrollers. Moreover, the STM32L4 series shatters performance limits in the ultra-low-power world. It delivers 100 DMIPS based on its ARM® Cortex®-M4 core with FPU and ST ART Accelerator™ at 80 MHz.

The STM32L4 microcontrollers offer dynamic voltage scaling to balance power consumption with processing demand, low-power peripherals (LP UART, LP timers) available in Stop mode, safety and security features, smart and numerous peripherals, advanced and low-power analog peripherals such as op amps, comparators, LCD, 12-bit DACs and 16-bit ADCs (hardware oversampling).

The series is currently available in 2 different product lines: STM32L476 (USB, LCD) and STM32L486 (USB, LCD, AES) with further variants planned for release during the coming months.

To simplify migration and give you all the flexibility you need, the STM32L4 is pin-to-pin compatible with other STM32 series and opens the door to the full STM32 ecosystem

Click on the video below to see an overview of the STM32L4 series.

The STM32L4 series are support by a full suite of development tools which includes the fully featured Evaluation Board ( STM32L476G-EVAL) and the Discovery Kit ( STM32L476G-DISCO) with features including a MEMS microphone and motion sensors, Digital-to-Analog Converter, 96-segment LCD, and 16Mbyte QSPI Flash memory. Users can fine-tune hardware and software on-the-fly throughout development, which helps reduce design risk.

There is also the option for performance-oriented, energy-conscious embedded design using the STM32 Nucleo board ( NUCLEO-L476RG). The Nucleo board has Arduino Uno headers for access to a wide choice of extension shields and integrates the ST-Link debugger/programmer that saves any need for a separate debug probe and allows drag-and-drop Flash programming. The Discovery and Nucleo boards both provide direct access to mbed online tools.

A full STM32Cube software suite is available, including the STM32CubeMX configurator and initialization-code generator with built-in design wizards and power-consumption calculator. In addition, the STM32CubeL4 model-specific embedded software provides a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), application examples, and new Low-Layer APIs that help maximize performance and runtime efficiency. The APIs can be used in parallel with the HAL and simplify migrating projects developed with STM32 standard peripheral libraries into the STM32Cube environment.
