Bourns has announced the introduction of the new Model MF-PSML Series of Multifuse® Polymer PTC Resettable Fuses. These 0805 size surface mount devices are among Bourns’ smallest size resettable fuses to use Bourns’ new low ohmic PTC material.
The MF-PSML Series has post trip resistance values as low as 25 mOhms and initial resistance values as low as 3 mOhms. Such low resistance values help to boost the current carrying capability of these new devices, using Model MF-PSML350-2, Bourns can now achieve up to 3.5 A Ihold in an 0805 package.
Multifuse® devices are designed to act as circuit protection components by limiting dangerous current surges (such as short circuits) in electrical equipment. The device reacts to an overcurrent event by changing from a very low resistance to a very high resistance state. This characteristic is known as the positive temperature coefficient or PTC effect. After the overcurrent surge has passed or the system power has been cycled, the device returns back to its low resistance state allowing the equipment to continue normal operation. The great advantage of fitting a Multifuse® device into the circuit is the reduced risk of field failures which in turn helps to lower servicing and repair costs.
Multifuse® circuit protection operation
The compact MF-PSML Series uses Bourns’ freeXpansion™ design which increases the performance of the resettable fuse over conventional designs. Performance advantages include higher hold currents (Ihold), improved resistance stability, higher voltages (Vmax) and smaller footprints.
Multifuse® resettable fuses are designed to protect against both overcurrent and overtemperature events up to the specified rated limits within applications. Typical applications for the MF-PSML Series include USB, HDMI and general I/O port protection, wireless products, battery packs, portable and wearable devices.
The new MF-PSML Series devices are RoHS compliant and UL recognized and have an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C.
