Introducing the ADG54xxF Analog fault detection and protection switch family from Analog Devices

Analog Devices have introduced the industry’s first analog fault detection and protection switch family designed for use with analog input/output modules in harsh environments. Enhancing system uptime, coupled with best-in-class performance, the ADG54xxF family of analog switches identify and protect in real time against faults in process control and data acquisition applications.

The new fault detection and protection switch family from Analog Devices consists of four parts, the ADG5412F, ADG5413F, ADG5412BF and ADG5413BF low/ultra-flat Ron switches. By identifying when a channel is in a fault, these innovative analog switches remove the need for additional hardware and software error-detection schemes, leading to an improvement in system uptime.

Data

The ADG54xxF devices contain four independently controlled single-pole/single-throw (SPST) switches. The ADG5412F and ADG5412BF have four switches that turn on with Logic 1 inputs and the ADG5413F and ADG5413BF have two switches with that turn on and two switches that turn off with Logic 1 inputs.

Each switch conducts equally well in both directions when on, and each switch has an input signal range that extends to the supplies. The digital inputs are compatible with 3 V logic inputs over the full operating supply range. When no power supplies are present, the switch remains in the off condition, and the switch inputs are high impedance. Under normal operating conditions, if the analog input signal levels on any switch pin exceed VDD or VSS by a threshold voltage, VT, then the switch turns off. Input signal levels up to +55 V or −55 V relative to ground are blocked, in both the powered and unpowered condition.

The low on resistance of these switches, combined with on-resistance flatness over a significant portion of the signal range make them an ideal solution for data acquisition and gain switching applications where excellent linearity and low distortion are critical.

Typical Applications

  • Analog input/output modules
  • Process control/distributed control systems
  • Data acquisition
  • Instrumentation
  • Avionics
  • Automatic test equipment
  • Communication systems
  • Relay replacement

The ADG54xxF switches also offer a best-in-class combination of robustness and precision performance in a small TSSOP16 package, suiting them for precision instrumentation, process control and avionic signal chains. Providing up to ± 55-V over-voltage protection, coupled with a 5.5 kV HBM ESD level for ADG5412F and ADG5413F and 3 kV HBM ESD level for ADG5412BF and ADG5413BF, these switches protect downstream system components in both power-on and power-off states, while protecting against hot-swapping and operator miss-use events. The leading-edge combination of low Ron, Ron flatness and low leakage, coupled with the removal of discrete protection components, leads to a reduction in signal distortion and system error budget. The ultra-low Ron flatness level offered by this family also minimizes system total harmonic distortion and noise performance.

Evaluation boards EVAL-ADG5412FEBZ and EVAL-ADG5412BFEBZ are also available from Analog Devices to assist engineers during the design in process. The Evaluation boards are fitted with the required power supply connections to power the board and control the digital inputs of each of the SPST switches. An on board LDO is provided to supply a digital voltage if only one supply is available and the boards have a digital output to indicate the state of the switch, which is used to control a LED for a visual indicator.
