Analog Devices introduces ADuM110N series of Robust iCoupler® Digital Isolators to Guarantee Safe System Functionality

ADV title

Analog Devices have introduced the industry’s most robust digital isolator series with the best combination of signal reliability, safety and performance. Based on Analog Devices patented iCoupler® digital isolation technology, the new isolator devices ensure safe system performance for applications operating in noisy, harsh and unpredictable healthcare and industrial environments.

One of the latest products introduced to the family is the ADuM110N series, this device is a single-channel digital isolator based on Analog Devices iCoupler® technology. Combining high speed, complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and monolithic air core transformer technology, this isolation component provides outstanding performance characteristics, superior to alternatives such as optocoupler devices and other integrated couplers.

Functional Block Diagram

The ADuM110N supports data rates as high as 150 Mbps with a withstand voltage rating of 3.0 kV rms. The digital isolator operates with the supply voltage on either side ranging from 1.8 V to 5 V, providing compatibility with lower voltage systems as well as enabling voltage translation functionality across the isolation barrier. The maximum propagation delay is 13 ns with a pulse width distortion of less than 3 ns at 5 V operation. Unlike other optocoupler alternatives, dc correctness is ensured in the absence of input logic transitions. Two different fail-safe options are available, in which the outputs transition to a predetermined state when the input power supply is not applied or the inputs are disabled, fail-safe output state high for ADuM110N1 and low for ADuM110N0.

Typical applications for the iCoupler® Digital Isolator products include medical and industrial products where high levels of isolation, surge protection and withstand voltage ratings are a prerequisite.

Medical - Advances in healthcare technology are pushing design boundaries by requiring wired patient monitors to function continuously during defibrillation. These high-voltage transients put a great burden on designing a dependable, connected medical system. To protect data signals in this unpredictable environment, the new iCoupler® digital isolators feature the highest in industry surge protection and withstand voltage ratings. And unlike other digital isolators, Analog Devices new, robust iCoupler® digital isolators can replace bulky optocouplers in harsh medical environments with a more compact solution.

Industrial automation - Precision robotic arms operate in unforgiving industrial factory floor environments. Modern high-speed communications used in factory automation must be isolated from electrical noise caused by arc welding and other equipment in order to avoid signal interference. Analog Devices iCoupler® digital isolators provide high noise immunity and surpass previous digital isolator options to ensure signal integrity.

By combining high-speed CMOS and monolithic air core transformer technology and an on-off-keying (OOK) architecture, the Analog Devices family of digital isolators offer the highest available noise immunity, lowest EMI and highest surge capability for broad market appeal. Analog Devices isolation components provide outstanding performance and proven galvanic isolation with more than 1.4 billion channels shipped and growing. Multiple products are in production today with versions in different packages and channel counts forthcoming.
